Teenager falls off scooter, run over by ambulance
Gurugram, May 4 -- A teenager riding a scooter died after he was allegedly mowed down by a speeding ambulance just after being hit by a car in Sector 4, which had led to him losing his balance while driving, police said on Saturday.
Investigators identified the deceased as Manav Kataria, aged 18, who lived in Sector 5 and attended a private college in the city.
Police said that he was going for a hair cut from his home when the accident took place at 12.30pm on Friday.
According to the police, Kataria was taken to a private hospital in Sector 38, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Gurugram police public relations officer (PRO), Sandeep Kumar, said that initially it was unclear which vehicle had hit Kataria.
"However, after scanning multiple CCTV camera footage, we zeroed-in on an ambulance which was involved in the accident and seized it from the parking of a hospital in New Colony on Saturday," he said.
Kumar said that a Kia Sonet car moving behind Kataria had a minor collision with his scooter following which he had lost his balance.
"While the scooter fell towards the pavement, the boy fell on the main road and the oncoming ambulance from the opposite lane ran over him resulting in instant death," he said.
The officer said that the ambulance driver had fled from the spot along with the vehicle after the incident.
Based on a complaint of the deceased's uncle Joginder Kataria, an FIR was registered against an unidentified vehicle driver under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Sector 9A police station on Friday evening.
Police said that the ambulance owner has been contacted to share details of the driver so that he can be arrested.
The deceased's body was handed over to the family after an autopsy on Friday evening...
