RRTs deployed across several eco-sensitive zones after two attacks
Haridwar, Dec. 4 -- The state forest department has intensified patrolling and deployed Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) across multiple elephant-and-leopard sensitive zones in Dehradun and Pauri districts, officials familiar with the matter said on Wednesday. The development came after two fatal wildlife attacks in the region within a week.
According to officials, an RRT has been stationed in the Lachhiwala, Thanu and Badkot forest ranges of Doiwala after a 12-year-old boy was trampled to death by a wild elephant last week. Teams are carrying out continuous patrolling in vulnerable stretches, particularly along forest fringes where human movement remains high, officials said.
"Patrolling by rapid response teams has been increased in areas prone to wild animal movement. Villagers in settlements adjoining forested terrain are also being sensitised. Warning signboards alerting residents about elephant-prone zones are being put up in sensitive locations," said Meghavi Kirti, forest ranger, Lachhiwala range.
In the neighbouring Badkot range, officials said round-the-clock vigilance has been stepped up, with special focus on night, dawn and dusk patrols. "Night vigil is being conducted daily and communication regarding wild animal movement is being regularly shared. Patrolling personnel have been asked to remain alert and sensitise villagers about preventive measures to reduce the risk of wildlife encounters," said Dheeraj Singh Rawat, ranger, Badkot range.
In Pauri district, a 15-member squad has been deployed in Dobhal-Dhandri village near Pauri town, where a leopard killed a woman last week. Seven cameras and three iron cages have been installed to monitor and capture the leopard if it returns, officials said....
