residents seek Crackdown on illegal liquor vends, taverns
Gurugram, Dec. 15 -- Concerns have been raised over alleged large-scale illegal operation of liquor vends and taverns across Gurugram. A detailed complaint by petitioner Kulbhushan Bhardwaj, a practising lawyer, alleges a "rampant breakdown of regulatory oversight." He states multiple establishments are permanent structures on private agricultural land without mandatory permissions. Bhardwaj claims many taverns host live singing and dance performances until 3-4am, violating policy. "These unlawful activities have created an atmosphere of nuisance, insecurity and regulatory collapse," he said, alleging violations of Noise Pollution Rules.
Residents report disturbances. "Every night feels like living next to an illegal nightclub," said Rohit Malhotra of DLF Phase 1. "The music goes on till 3am...families here are scared." Neha Arora said, "These taverns operate like lawless zones...We've complained for months, but nothing changes."
In a separate submission, Supreme Court advocate Rajeev Yadav alleged taverns serve hookah past midnight, violating the statutory ban. He further claimed vends sell liquor below minimum price and supply illicit liquor. A key allegation is that advance information about inspections is passed via WhatsApp. "When inspections are pre-informed, enforcement becomes a farce," Yadav said. He has sought surprise inspections and an independent inquiry.
Officials confirmed receipt of complaints. Amit Bhatia, deputy excise and taxation commissioner for the east, said, "We are conducting surprise raids, getting stock checked and keeping a close watch on illegal activities." Town and country planning officials said inspections will be carried out on Monday....
