Residents flag drainage gaps, flood risks
Gurugram, March 11 -- Even as the Gurugram civic bodies get busy with pre-monsoon preparations , residents on Tuesday flagged poor upkeep on key stretches, citing missing stormwater drainage links, poor roads, and hazards.
Problem areas include New Gurugram sectors along the Dwarka Expressway, Bajghera Road; sectors 99A, 110, 112, and 62-65; and the sectors 73-75 intersection on the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR). Issues were also reported in older localities such as Mehrauli Road, Palam Vihar, Old Basai Road, Sector 21 and Dhundahera.
Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) officials stated that 40 drainage trouble spots were identified in the district last month, with Khandsa, Basai, Begumpur Khatola and Chakkarpur among the worst affected. A Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) report also flagged 32 locations with missing or broken stormwater drains, including areas under the jurisdiction of the GMDA, MCG and public works department (PWD).
Residents highlighted persistent flooding. Sandeep Singh, a Sector 66 resident, said pockets in Badshahpur village lack proper drainage. "The stretch from Prajapati Road linking to the graveyard... remains filled with knee-deep water during the peak monsoon. Repeated complaints go unheard," he said, adding desilting hasn't begun yet encroachments have appeared on master stormwater drains.
Praveen Thakur of the Habitat Society in Sector 99A said poor drainage cuts off connectivity to the Dwarka Expressway during rains. "Many commuters face risk as this stretch is filled with potholes... Locals are forced to travel 8km via Manesar to reach sectors 62-65 during monsoon."
Prakash Lamba, president of Sector 21 RWA, noted that "while two-thirds of a master drain has been cleaned, 300m is still pending, which could obstruct water flow." Durgesh Jha of Hero Homes in Sector 104 said "the Dhanwapur underpass situation has improved, but flooding returns after sewage overflow."
A senior PWD official said waterproofing work has largely resolved the underpass issue and a tender for pumps has been finalised. MCG officials stated plans to install 109 modular rainwater harvesting systems, "with work complete in some areas and tenders underway for others. Over 150 waterlogging points have been identified."
Meanwhile, A GMDA spokesperson said, "Contractors have been penalised for delays, with fines of Rs.1.28 crore and Rs.5.5 crore imposed on different contractors for failing to meet timelines. A 5.2 km stormwater drain is set be completed by June."...
