Rakesh Tikait leads march to Doon over student murder case
Haridwar, April 4 -- Prominent farmer leader Rakesh Tikait of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) on Friday led a march towards Dehradun along with a large number of farmers, expressing concern over law and order following the recent killing of a student in the city.
Tikait, who is the national spokesperson of the BKU, undertook the march with farmers from Uttarakhand and neighbouring Uttar Pradesh.
The group of farmers reached Asharodi check post on the outskirts of Dehradun during the march.
Speaking to the media, Tikait referred to the recent killing of student Divyanshu Jatrana and said the manner in which he was allegedly murdered by a group of students had created fear among residents. "A couple of such incidents involving students in Dehradun indicate a rise in crime and laxity by the local administration in maintaining law and order. Uttarakhand is regarded as Devbhoomi, and such incidents in its interim capital hurt the peaceful and humble nature of the people of the state," Tikait said.
He urged the local administration and the state government to ensure that peace and a sense of security are restored in the city. The BKU leader also linked the rising crime to the alleged spread of drugs in the region.
"Consumption, supply and distribution of drugs is a major reason behind such incidents. The administration must safeguard society, particularly the youth, from the drug menace and take strict action against those involved in illegal drug networks," Tikait said.
He also appealed to the younger generation to promote harmony and brotherhood and avoid discrimination on the basis of caste, religion, colour or state.htc...
