Rains trigger repeated blockages on Kedarnath route, say officials
Mussoorie, June 28 -- Continuous spells of rainfall in Rudraprayag district has led to repeated blockages along the Kedarnath Yatra route, particularly between Sonprayag and Gaurikund, disrupting movement of pilgrims for the second consecutive day on Friday.
Heavy overnight rain caused landslides and boulder fall at Munkatiya and near the Sonprayag shuttle bridge, halting vehicular traffic in the early morning hours. Pedestrian movement, however, continued under close monitoring.
PWD NH Division Executive Engineer Omkar Pandey said debris and boulders triggered by the landslides had blocked the path, forcing the temporary suspension of yatra on Thursday. "Our teams cleared the route by 9 AM on Friday to resume movement," he said.
District Information Officer Veereshwar Tomar added that pilgrims were held back temporarily as a precaution. Once the route was cleared, they were allowed to proceed under police guidance.
District Magistrate Prateek Jain urged pilgrims to remain alert and follow official advisories during the monsoon. "Pilgrims should drive slowly, avoid negligence, and ensure drivers are well-rested to prevent accidents," he said. He directed departments to ensure crash barriers, barricades, warning signs, and deployment of security personnel at sensitive locations.
Anand Shukla, Kedarnath temple priest and member of the Kedar Sabha, confirmed intermittent rainfall near the shrine throughout Friday. "Despite a brief morning halt, pilgrim movement continued during the day," he said, reiterating appeals for pilgrims to pause at safe locations during periods of heavy rainfall.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Dehradun centre, several locations in the state recorded moderate rainfall between 8:30 AM and 3 PM on Friday, including Chaubatia (12 mm), Lansdowne (12 mm), Almora (6 mm), and Rudraprayag (1.5 mm). The highest 24-hour rainfall was reported in Bageshwar (27.5 mm) and Uttarkashi (15.4 mm) till 8:30 AM.
IMD has issued an 'Orange Alert' from June 28 to July 1, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and intense lightning spells across multiple districts including Dehradun, Haridwar, Tehri, Nainital, Chamoli, and Bageshwar.
On Saturday, isolated regions of Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri, and Tehri are likely to receive very heavy downpours, with thunderstorms and intense rainfall expected elsewhere....
