Dehradun, Jan. 24 -- The Nanda Devi Raj Jat committee on Friday postponed the Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra to 2027, officials said, even as a rival group announced its disregard of the postponement and said it would go ahead with the pilgrimage, which traditionally takes place once every twelve years.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, Nanda Devi Raj Jat committee president Dr Rakesh Singh Kunwar said the yatra was originally scheduled to be held from September 4 to September 19 this year, based on astrological calculations, but was postponed owing to the possibility adverse weather conditions in the higher reaches of the Himalayas.
The Yatra is held in honour of Goddess Nanda Devi and generally spans nearly three weeks. It involves an ardous trek through remote Himalayan villages, high-altitude meadows and snowbound mountain passes, covering around 280 km from Chamoli to Homkund near Roopkund.
After the announcement, the Sidhpeeth Nanda Devi Mandir Samiti, based in Kurud, rejected the decision....
