Meerut, Aug. 14 -- A major robbery occurred on Tuesday evening near the Sohrab Gate bus stand in the Nauchandi police station area in Meerut, where two men posing as police officers looted gold ornaments worth approximately Rs.55.5 lakh from a jewellery craftsman. The victim, Dilawar, a resident of Hooghly district in West Bengal, works as a gold ornament maker in Neel ki Gali under Delhi Gate police station limits. On Tuesday, he had bought jewellery from Dhali Bazaar in Chandpur, Bijnor, and was returning with a friend on a motorcycle. At around 5:30 pm, when they reached near Sohrab Gate bus stand on Ghar Road, two youths in plain clothes approached them. Introducing themselves as policemen, the suspects began a "check" and seized the bag containing the ornaments. They threatened Dilawar before fleeing on a motorcycle. Notably, the spot where the robbery occurred is just a few steps away from a police check-post. After being informed, Nauchandi police reached the spot and began questioning the victim. CCTV footage from the area is being examined to identify the culprits. General Secretary of the Meerut Bullion Traders Association, Vijay Anand Agarwal, also visited the scene and later met police officials demanding swift action. SP City Ayush Vikram Singh said that the matter is under investigation and assured that the accused would be arrested soon.
