Pollution, 'illegal trade' near Galleria mkt reach NGT
Gurugram, June 5 -- The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has issued notices to concerned parties over alleged environmental violations and unauthorised commercial activity on a privately owned plot in Sector 27, Gurugram, near Galleria Market. The matter will be heard next on July 4, 2025.
The action follows a complaint by Shiv Kumar Dubey, a local resident, who alleged that land near Hamilton Court condominium has been illegally converted into a commercial hub with shops, eateries, and liquor vends-without mandatory approvals. In its May 30 order, the NGT bench of Justice Arun Kumar Tyagi and expert member Dr Afroz Ahmad observed that the petition raises "critical environmental concerns."
According to the petition, several establishments on the site operate illegal diesel generator (DG) sets, burn waste, and lack sewage treatment facilities-leading to poor air quality, increased noise pollution, and respiratory issues in the vicinity.
The order noted that a February 2025 inspection by Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam Ltd found unauthorised electricity connections and power resale. While the supply was disconnected, DG sets reportedly remain in use.
