Patient raped inside ICU, Cong slams govt
Jaipur/Alwar, June 8 -- A political slugfest erupted after a 32-year-old woman was raped allegedly by a nursing staff at the intensive care unit (ICU) of a government hospital in Rajasthan's Alwar, with opposition leaders on Saturday targeting the ruling party over negligence towards women safety and deteriorating law and order situation.
Taking to X, former chief minister Ashok Gehlot said that during the tenure of the Congress government, Rajasthan's health model became a topic of discussion in the country and the world, but the BJP government has ruined it. "The incidents of rape of a woman in the ICU of a hospital in Alwar is an example for it. The people of the state are regretting that more than a year of tenure for such an incompetent government is still left. How bad will the condition of the state be at this time!!," he wrote.
According to police, a 32-year-old woman who was admitted to the ICU of the ESIC Hospital in Alwar was raped allegedly by a nursing staff on Wednesday and the matter came to the fore on Friday night when her husband lodged an FIR at Alwar's MIA police station against the accused, Subhash Ghitala (30).
DSP Sunil Prasad Sharma, said, "The woman was admitted to the hospital on June 2 for a tubectomy and she was shifted to ICU on Wednesday after the surgery. At around 11pm, her husband was asked by the guard of ICU to wait outside when a male nursing staff member along with the guard went inside. At 2am, her husband was asked to attend to the woman as Ghitala told him that she was experiencing some side effects of an injection. On Thursday morning, the woman, after regaining her consciousness, told her husband that Ghitala raped her."
Following the incident, the victim and her husband approached the ADM City, who directed the MIA police to take action. A case was lodged against Ghitala under section 64 (rape) of BNS.
"Her medical examination was conducted. Nobody has been arrested so far as the matter is under a departmental inquiry by the local health department unit in Alwar. We are probing the role of the guard too," he said.
Meanwhile, the woman also reported the matter to the hospital authority and her attending doctors on Thursday.
Dr Aseem Das, Dean of the ESIC Medical College, said, "She confronted Ghitala in front of the doctors during which the accused confessed to the crime. We have formed a special committee to prepare a detailed report by Saturday that will be submitted to police. Ghitala has been suspended from hospital."
Leader of opposition Tikaram Jully said that the BJP ministers were busy protecting their chairs while the law and order has constantly been deteriorating.
"This is a serious question mark on the law and order situation in the state where the MP from Alwar is a minister at the Centre and the MLA is a minister in the state government," he wrote on X.
State Congress president Govind Dotasra wrote on X, "Chief Minister, wake up from deep sleep and see that every day small innocent girls are being raped in the state, the dignity of women is being shattered. Under your misrule, cases of brutality against minors have increased by more than 18% since 2023."
Hitting back at the Congress, BJP spokesperson Laxmikant Bharadwaj said, "Has the Congress forgot how many rape cases had been reported during their time ? And police used to refuse taking complaints... The BJP government maintains a zero tolerance to any such crime. The FIR has been lodged and the accused will be behind the bar soon."...
