Jaipur, May 14 -- Days after six people were killed after a fire broke out at a five-storey hotel in Rajasthan's Ajmer, the owner and the manager of the hotel were arrested on Tuesday for running the premises illegally without holding any fire safety clearances from the local administration, police said. "Following the incident, the district police formed a team and launched a thorough probe during which it was found that the hotel did not obtain a legal fire NOC from the local administration and also failed to set up proper fire safety measures. There was also no emergency exit and a fire alarm that led the situation more severe on May 1 as the people could not escape timely," said additional police superintendent of Ajmer, Himangshu Jangid. He further said that the hotel owner Rajendra Kumar (42) and the manager Srikant Pandeya (47) were arrested on Tuesday for their alleged negligence in running this hotel that killed six people including three men, two women, and also a 3-year-old minor. A case has been registered against the hotel authorities under sections 125 (a), 125 (b), 106 (1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The incident took place on May 1 morning when at least 40 boarders - most of whom were pilgrims at Ajmer Sharif Dargah. "A massive broke out due to a suspected short circuit in the first floor of the hotel in Diggi Bazaar area around 8am. Six people died due to suffocation after the flames engulfed the entire building. Five fire tenders and police personnel rushed to the spot and the flame was brought under control around 10am. The narrow lanes leading up to the hotel hampered the rescue work," Jangid said. Many boarders jumped off the building to save their lives while many got stuck in fire.
