Over 1.5 m devotees expected; heavy bandobast in place
Meerut, June 3 -- Ganga Dussehra will be celebrated with fervour on June 5, drawing an estimated 1.5 million devotees to 22 major ghats across the Meerut range, including the banks of the Ganga and other rivers.
Elaborate security arrangements have been put in place, with the deployment of Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) companies and additional police personnel to ensure smooth and safe conduct of the festivities. The largest gathering is expected at Braj Ghat in Hapur district, for which two PAC companies have been specially allocated. DIG Kalanidhi Naithani has issued detailed instructions to police chiefs of all districts within the range - including Meerut, Bulandshahr, Baghpat, and Hapur - emphasising vigilance, coordination, and crowd management. For Braj Ghat alone, the deployment includes 5 circle officers (COs), 20 inspectors, 120 sub-inspectors, 300 head constables and constables, 25 women sub-inspectors, 110 women head constables and constables, 15 traffic sub-inspectors, 40 traffic head constables and constables, along with 2 companies of PAC.
In addition to Braj Ghat, four ghats in Meerut, 14 in Bulandshahr, 1 in Baghpat, and 3 in Hapur are expected to witness major pilgrim turnout. Police have already conducted coordination meetings with religious leaders, peace committees, and event organisers to ensure discipline and security during the celebrations. District police chiefs have been directed to work in coordination with neighbouring districts for traffic diversions, prepare well-structured and secure bathing areas, and begin foot patrols along the riverbanks from the eve of the event.
The DIG has instructed that devotees should not be stopped unnecessarily by police personnel during their pilgrimage. To handle any emergency, divers and boats will remain on standby. The presence of CCTV cameras will be ensured, and their numbers will be increased wherever needed to provide real-time monitoring....
