Orange alert issued for heavy rain; pilgrim dies in Chamoli distt
Mussoorie, July 21 -- An 18-year-old Sikh pilgrim from Punjab died after falling into a gorge while on the Hemkund Sahib Yatra route near Pulna in Chamoli district on Sunday, officials familiar with the matter said. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Dehradun Centre on Sunday issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in several districts on Monday and Tuesday
According to the Chamoli district emergency control room, the incident occurred around 10 am when the pilgrim, identified as Gurpreet Singh, reportedly deviated from the designated trekking path and attempted to use a damaged shortcut near Jungle Chatti, approximately two kilometres from Pulna.
"Singh, a resident of Kale village in Amritsar, was part of a 90-member pilgrimage group. Ignoring safety warnings and bypassing a protective railing, he ventured onto a closed shortcut route that had been deemed unsafe. He slipped and fell into a deep gorge during the attempt," they said.
Rescue teams comprising personnel from the Govindghat police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and other emergency services rushed to the spot upon receiving information. The body was recovered and taken to the nearest hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. The body was then transferred to the Joshimath mortuary for post-mortem examination, the officials added.In a separate incident, a 59-year-old man died after his vehicle fell off the road in Uttarkashi district. District disaster management officer Shardul Gusain said the victim, identified as Indrapal Singh Parmar, a resident of Paini Bhawan village, was driving a Max vehicle on the Paini Bhawan road in Dunda tehsil when the accident occurred. The weather department has issued an orange alert for Monday and Tuesday, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Nainital, Champawat, and Udham Singh Nagar districts.
