New Delhi, Dec. 11 -- To ease chronic congestion along Mathura Road and Sir CV Raman Marg, the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), in a recent communique, urged the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to expedite the completion of access roads linking several south Delhi neighbourhoods to NH-148NA, the DND-Manesar spur of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. In a letter sent in September, S Velmurugan, chief scientist and head of the traffic engineering and safety division at CSIR-CRRI, warned that the absence of these access roads was creating severe bottlenecks for thousands of commuters. According to the letter, the proposed links will significantly ease traffic flow for residents of Batla House, New Friends Colony, Zakir Nagar, Khizrabad and Taimoor Nagar - neighbourhoods that collectively witness the movement of more than 100,000 vehicles daily. "The huge traffic volume plying on Sir CV Raman Marg and Mathura Road is causing severe congestion for residents of the adjoining colonies. Completing the pending access roads will provide major relief and ease congestion by offering an alternative route for vehicles heading towards central and south Delhi, including the airport, New Delhi railway station and Barapullah, as well as toward Noida and Faridabad," the letter, reviewed by HT, states. NH-148NA, which connects the DND Flyway to Manesar and merges with the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, has been designed to cut travel time between Delhi and Gurugram to under 30 minutes. The 59km corridor, built at a cost of more than Rs.4,000 crore, is expected to decongest existing arterial routes such as Mathura Road, Ashram Chowk and NH-48. CRRI has emphasised that constructing access links on both sides of the highway is essential to ensure seamless last-mile connectivity....
