Man, 26, hung upside down; beaten over theft allegation
Gurugram, July 30 -- A 26-year-old man was brutally assaulted after being hung upside down in the basement of an under-construction residential society in Gurugram's Sector 37C on June 11, after allegedly being caught stealing electric wires, police said on Tuesday. The incident came to light late Monday night after a video of the assault surfaced on social media.
Police said the assault occurred between 9am and 9.30am and that four men, two private security supervisors and two guards, were arrested early Tuesday from Basai Enclave. The prime accused, Bittu, a contractor with the real estate firm managing the construction, is currently absconding.
The victim, originally from Rajasthan and part of a minority community, who worked as an earthmoving vehicle operator at the site, was allegedly caught stealing in an inebriated condition on the night of June 10, police said. He was held hostage overnight in the basement of Tower 2 until Bittu arrived the next morning, they added.
Following this, the contractor allegedly instructed the guards to tie the victim's limbs with heavy ropes and suspend him upside down from iron pipes in the basement. "One of the guards visible in the video kept the rope tied to his feet tightened to ensure the victim remained hanging, while the contractor kept assaulting him repeatedly with a stick," said a police officer, requesting anonymity.
The video, which lasts around 20 minutes, shows the victim crying for mercy as the main accused, wearing a white t-shirt and jogging trousers, is heard saying, "Let him beg for water first; he is yet to be properly assaulted."
Police spokesperson Sandeep Kumar said an FIR was registered suo motu under sections of assault, wrongful confinement, and criminal intimidation of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the Sector 10 police station.
The four arrested have been identified as Pushpendra Kumar (39, Bhind), Ajit Singh (38, Bhiwani), Krishan Kumar (19, Rewari), and Amit Kumar (39, Amritsar). "Ajit and Amit were the security supervisors, while Pushpendra and Krishan were guards. It was Krishan who kept the rope pulled tight," Kumar said.
After the assault, the victim was released and later took up work at another Gurugram site but never filed a complaint, reportedly out of fear. Police are now trying to trace the person who filmed the video and locate the victim for a magistrate statement and medical examination....
