Lift malfunction at Meerut South Rapid Station: One hospitalised
Meerut, Aug. 12 -- Eight people, including women and young children, were trapped inside a lift at Meerut South Rapid Station in Partapur on Sunday evening after it suddenly broke down mid-way. One man collapsed due to suffocation and was later hospitalised in a serious condition.
Punit Vats, spokesperson for the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), said, "The lift has been shut down for now. We are investigating the cause."
As per reports, the lift had just started going up when it suddenly stopped. Those inside pressed the buttons and tried calling the helpline number written inside, but no one answered.
The group included Rubina Jafar from Rohini, Delhi; sisters Jyoti and Sangeeta from Vijay Nagar, Ghaziabad; Komal from Delhi Gate with her daughters Vrinda ,10, and Kavya ,1 and Sanjeev Kushwaha from Kailashpuri with his two-year-old son Ruhi.
As the air inside grew hot and suffocating, the passengers managed to call Rubina's brother Nabeel and also contacted the police helpline 112. Police arrived, restarted the lift, and rescued the group. Shortly after being brought out, Sanjeev Kushwaha collapsed and was rushed to Subharti Hospital.
Authorities have not yet given a reason for the malfunction. The incident has raised serious concerns about passenger safety and emergency response at rapid transit stations....
