Independent journalist murdered in Dehradun, 1 booked, say police
Dehradun, Dec. 18 -- A 42-year-old man was booked on Tuesday for murdering an independent journalist in Dehradun on Monday, police said on Wednesday.
The accused was identified as Amit Sehgal, they added.
On Monday night, Sehgal and his accomplices allegedly barged into the victim, Pankaj Mishra' home in Jakhan and severely assaulted him, said a senior police officer.
One of them reportedly asked the others to specifically target the victim's chest and stomach on the basis of prior knowledge of his health issues, demonstrating intent to kill, added police.
According to the complaint filed by Arvind Mishra, the victim's brother, the accused also snatched the phones of his brother and his wife before they fled the spot.
"Pankaj later informed the police about the incident using a passerby's phone and was asked to come for a medical examination. However, due to fear, he postponed the examination till the next morning. In the early hours of December 16, around 3 am, Pankaj complained of severe pain and called out to his wife. Shortly after getting up from the bed, he collapsed and lost consciousness. Neighbours were alerted and he was rushed to Doon Hospital in an ambulance, where doctors declared him dead," the FIR stated, quoting the complainant.
Police said post-mortem examination was performed twice at the family's request, after the first test marked the cause of death as inconclusive.
According to the deceased's brother, he was earlier associated with a newspaper titled "Dainik Prastav" and currently used to write on social media.
He claimed that the deceased and the accused were friends, but the accused took objection to a post uploaded by the deceased on social media and threatened to teach him a lesson.
Pradeep Rawat, station house officer at Rajpur police station, said, "We have registered the FIR on the complaint of the deceased's brother and registered the FIR. We are searching for the accused."...
