IMD: Rain and gusts to persist till May-end
New Delhi, May 27 -- May is expected to end in Delhi on a wet and stormy note, with rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds likely over the coming days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday. Thundery developments are expected on Tuesday and Wednesday, with light rain and gusts of up to 60km/hr on Friday and Saturday-potentially adding to a record-breaking month of rainfall.
With 186.4mm of rain so far, this May is now Delhi's wettest on record, surpassing 165mm recorded in May 2008. "This wet spell is expected to continue in the coming days. There is ample moisture in the air, so thundery development is possible. A yellow alert has also been issued for May 30 for thunderstorms with rain and winds of 60km/hr," an IMD official said. On May 31, similar activity is likely, with winds of up to 50km/hr.
No heatwave days are expected, unlike last May, when Delhi recorded six straight days of over 45degC. Active weather systems-a western disturbance and two cyclonic circulations-have kept mercury levels in check. Delhi recorded 35.1degC and 25.2degC on Monday, while Gurugram logged 32.6degC and 26.2degC. Delhi's AQI stood at 97 ("satisfactory") and Gurugram's at 92, improving from Sunday's 123 ("moderate")....
