Haridwar traders flag 2 landslides, demand solution
Haridwar, Sept. 11 -- With two major landslides hitting the Haridwar-Motichur railway line near Shri Mata Dat Maha Kali temple in less than a month, the trader fraternity in the city has expressed serious concern and demanded a long-term solution to the recurring hazard.
At a meeting convened under the banner of Shahar Vyapar Mandal on Tuesday, traders called for a scientific survey and treatment of the fragile Shivalik rock cliff adjoining the Mata Mansa Devi shrine near Har-ki-Pauri.
"We are deeply worried about the continuous falling of boulders, mud, and debris from the slope. It poses a threat to railway passengers, pilgrims, local residents, and traders who run shops near the temple and track in Bhimgoda. The government must initiate expert-led treatment and survey other vulnerable sites as well," said the Shahar Vyapar Mandal president Rajeev Parashar.
District vice-president Vipin Sharma criticised the administration for prioritising mega-projects like the Har-ki-Pauri corridor and ring road while "neglecting the pressing landslide problem near Har-ki-Pauri, which endangers lives on a daily basis."
Moti Bazaar traders' division president Ashu Sharma added that stakeholders and shopkeepers should be consulted before any new infrastructure projects are planned in and around Har-ki-Pauri.
The demand comes a day after a major landslide struck around 6.30 am on Monday, damaging part of the temple premises and the Haridwar-Dehradun railway line.
Overhead electrical wires were also affected by the landslide, and heavy boulders remained suspended precariously on the protective wire mesh along the slope.
Train services on the Haridwar-Dehradun and Haridwar-Rishikesh sections were suspended for nearly 11 hours before operations resumed at 5.55 pm.
According to railway officials, 23 trains were disrupted due to the blockage.
On August 5, a similar landslide had occurred at the same site, leading to a 20-hour suspension of rail services and causing two motorcyclists to skid when debris fell onto the road below.
Traders in the region have urged the state government to ensure that permanent treatment of the sensitive slope is completed before the onset of the next monsoon....
