Farrukhabad village pradhan, sons booked for distributing biryani to flood victims
KANPUR, Aug. 20 -- Two men, including a village pradhan's son, have been arrested for allegedly hurting religious sentiments by distributing biryani packets in a flood-hit village in Farrukhabad.
Police have booked village pradhan Mohammad Shami, his two sons, and several associates in the case. The pradhan and his other son are currently absconding, said police on Monday.
Police said that an FIR has been registered against village headman Mohammad Shami, his two sons and aides. Shami's son Saif Ali and his associate Sami alias Mustaqeem have been arrested, while the pradhan and his other son are still absconding.
The controversy erupted on Saturday evening in Raipur Chinhatpur village under Kampil police station limits, after residents alleged that the biryani packets distributed by pradhan and his associates contained meat pieces and bones.
A villager named Sunil filed a complaint, claiming that when questioned, Shami allegedly responded that "biryani is eaten by all communities."
A video recorded by the villagers went viral on social media, further fuelling tensions.
On Sunday morning, locals, along with Hindutva outfits such as the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Hindu Mahasabha, gathered at the local police station demanding strict action against the pradhan and his family.
The groups alleged that the distribution was meant to hurt religious sentiments and warned of launching an agitation if the police did not act.
Additional superintendent of police Dr Sanjay Kumar Singh said a case had been registered against four persons and assured that stern action will be taken against the guilty.
Security has been stepped up in the area to prevent any escalation of tensions, he added.
The incident comes amid severe flooding in the region, where relief efforts and food distribution are underway. Nearly 100 villages have been affected by the flood....
