LUCKNOW, July 24 -- The Economic Offenses Wing (EOW) team has arrested a former assistant development officer, in connection with a foodgrain scam in Ballia district held between 2002 and 2005, said EOW officials in a press note shared on Tuesday. They said he was wanted in a case related to the embezzlement of government funds meant for rural development projects. They further informed that the EOW team arrested the accused from near Akhri Chowk in Varanasi on Tuesday. The officials informed the arrested accused was identified as Surya Shyam Singh and he was posted as the then assistant development officer at Bansdeeh Block of Ballia during the duration of the scam. They said the scam involved the misappropriation of approximately Rs.27 lakh allocated for various rural development projects under the Sampoorna Grameen Rozgar Yojana in Ballia's Bansdeeh block. The investigation revealed that the accused, along with other officials and traders, had prepared fake muster rolls and distributed food grains to fictitious labourers....
