India, July 29 -- The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) on Monday said that it has intensified the construction of a drainage network in developing sectors of the city to prevent waterlogging during the monsoons. Construction of stormwater drains is underway in sectors 68-75 and 112-115, as part of GMDA's plan to ensure efficient stormwater discharge, a GMDA official said. This year, the authority as an emergency measure managed to dig a 'kuccha drain' from Narsinghpur to the Badshahpur drain, which prevented heavy waterlogging on the Delhi-Jaipur National Highway. However, the delay in completion of the SPR drain, lack of surface drains on several roads and damaged drains ensured that the city came to a standstill on July 9, when Gurugram recorded nearly 133 mm rain in 24 hours. GMDA officials said that in order to prevent waterlogging in developing sectors, the authority is constructing RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete) box-type master stormwater drains in developing sectors. In Sectors 68 to 75, the authority officials said that they will lay approximately 17.63 km of RCC box-type stormwater drains of varying sizes. The collected runoff will be directed into a master drain currently under construction along the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR), stretching from Vatika Chowk to NH-48, before ultimately merging with the Leg-III Badshahpur drain. The covered areas include Sectors 68, 69, 70, 70A, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, and 75A. This section of the project, estimated to cost Rs.51 crore, is slated for completion by August 2026, they added. GMDA is also implementing a similar drainage project in Sectors 112 to 115, involving the construction of 7.59km of RCC box-type drains. "These new drains will be connected to the existing Leg-I master drain that runs along the area. To further strengthen flood prevention mechanisms, a pumping station is also being constructed in Sector 115. The station will serve to prevent any backflow of stormwater into the network during periods of intense rainfall by becoming operational in tandem with the proposed new drain," said a GMDA spokesperson. Currently, Gurugram's stormwater is managed by three major drains-Leg-I (Sikanderpur through Palam Vihar to Najafgarh drain), Leg-II (Sector 42 via Millennium City Centre to Najafgarh drain), and Leg-III, also known as the Badshahpur drain (Ghata Village via Vatika Chowk, Hero Honda Chowk, Sector 99 to Najafgarh drain). These form the backbone of the city's drainage infrastructure....
