New Delhi, Oct. 13 -- A badly decomposed body stuffed in a plastic bag wrapped with brown tape was discovered in the Hindon canal in East Delhi's Ghazipur, police said on Sunday, in what appears to be a case of murder. The body's condition made it difficult to determine both the victim's identity and gender. Police believe the body is nearly a month old and belongs to a person aged between 30 and 40. Long hair suggests the victim could be a woman, though a final determination awaits an autopsy, which is also critical to establish the cause of death. The body will be kept in the mortuary for at least 72 hours for identification before the autopsy is conducted. The discovery was made on Saturday evening by ragpickers collecting garbage near the canal. Deputy commissioner of police (east) Abhishek Dhania said, "The police personnel opened the bag and found a badly decomposed human body, the skeleton of which was visible. The body was wrapped with brown tape. It looked nearly a month old." The area was cordoned off for forensic evidence collection. A case against unknown persons has been registered under sections 103 (murder) and 238 (causing disappearance of evidence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the Ghazipur police station. Investigation is underway to identify the deceased and the circumstances of the incident. Police are also ascertaining if the murder occurred in Delhi or if the body travelled from Uttar Pradesh via the canal. Investigators are preparing a list of people, especially women, reported missing in Delhi-NCR over the past month....
