Haldwani, Nov. 29 -- Uttarakhand forest department has decided to conduct a crocodile census in the Terai and Bhabar regions after 11 years. The two-day exercise will cover crocodile populations in rivers, streams and reservoirs across Nainital and Udham Singh Nagar districts, forest officials said. Terai East forest division DFO Himanshu Bagri said, "After 11 years, crocodiles will be counted in rivers and streams within the Terai East forest division. This census will yield updated figures. The previous crocodile census was held in 2014, when 68 crocodiles were recorded. The numbers are expected to rise this time. A detailed action plan has been prepared, and this region is being developed for tourism as well." For the census, forces from five forest ranges will be deployed. Twenty personnel from the Surai Range and five each from the remaining four ranges will take part. Training for the teams will be held on December 1, 2025, followed by the census on December 2 and 3, Bagri said.
