Gurugram, June 16 -- A couple died after a brick wall constructed for soil retention collapsed on them during basement work at a residential society in Sohna on Sunday, police said. The incident took place between 1.30pm and 1.45pm at Sohna Dhani village. The deceased were identified as Prashant Kumar, 32, and his wife Lakshmi Devi, 29, both daily-wage labourers from Lalitpur district in Uttar Pradesh. They were living in Sohna on rent and were engaged in piling work in the basement at the time of the incident, investigators said. According to police, the newly built retention wall was meant to prevent soil cave-in during construction, but likely due to an error, it could not withstand the soil pressure and collapsed on the couple, crushing them. "Other workers raised an alarm. Several labourers gathered and pulled Prashant out by removing debris ," said Parveen Malik, station house officer of Sohna City police station. He was rushed to the sub-divisional hospital in a private vehicle but referred to Civil Hospital, Sector 10A, due to the severity of his injuries. "He died on the way in an ambulance," Malik said. Lakshmi was later extricated but was unresponsive. Doctors at Sohna hospital declared her dead on arrival. Police said both bodies are preserved at the government mortuary and will be handed over after autopsy on Monday. "If the family alleges negligence, we will register an FIR against the contractor. Otherwise, an inquiry under Section 194 of BNSS will be conducted," said Malik....
