contractors hired to clear legacy waste, work underway: mcg assures
Gurugram, May 3 -- After the Supreme Court demanded answers from the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) over recurring fires at the Bandhwari landfill, the civic body on Friday assured the top court that it has already put measures in place to clear the legacy waste of nine lakh metric tonnes by July 30.
MCG commissioner Ashok Kumar Garg said, "We have hired two private contractors who have already begun processing the legacy waste. The entire waste of nine lakh metric tonnes will be completely cleared by July 30, as per our commitment to the Supreme Court. Regular monitoring is taking place, with senior officials, including sub-divisional officers and executive engineers, visiting the landfill daily to oversee operations. Additionally, we have permanently stationed a fire tender at the site to immediately respond to any fire-related incidents."
However, environmental activist Vaishali Rana, who has filed several Public Interest Litigations (PILs) at the National Green Tribunal (NGT), countered the claims made by the MCG. She highlighted significant discrepancies in the civic body's figures and execution plans. "The total waste at Bandhwari is not nine lakh metric tonnes as claimed by MCG, but actually around 12 lakh metric tonnes. Moreover, the capacity has dwindled down to 200 tonnes per day, making the deadline appear unrealistic," Rana said....
