BJP expels former MLA for polygamy
Dehradun, June 29 -- The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has expelled its former MLA Suresh Rathore for six years over allegations of marrying an actor without divorcing his first wife.
Suresh Rathore, the former MLA from Jwalapur constituency in Haridwar, held a press conference on June 15 to acknowledge his marriage to actor Urmila Sanawar allegedly without legally divorcing his wife, Ravindra Kaur. Rathore was the MLA from the constituency from 2017 to 2022.
Polygamy is illegal for members of the Hindu community under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, while the state's Uniform Civil Code Act, 2024, banned polygamy for all individuals in the state. After the Opposition Congress raised the issue as "violation of UCC", the BJP had issued a show-cause notice to the former MLA, seeking an explanation from him.
On June 25, he submitted his explanation to the party. Taking a U-turn, the former MLA said it was merely a "rehearsal scene of a film titled, 'Bhabhi Ji Vidhayak Hai', which is being produced by his production house".
State BJP media in-charge Manveer Singh Chauhan said, "The party took cognizance of the viral video circulating on social media showing his indecent conduct and issued him a show-cause notice. Although he submitted an explanation, the party found it unsatisfactory. He was found guilty of repeatedly violating the party's code of conduct and dignity. On the instructions of state president Mahendra Bhatt, he has been expelled from the party for six years."
Meanwhile, Rathore said, "I am not aware of my expulsion from the party. I don't want to say anything."...
