4 violations account for nearly 50% of all challans
Gurugram, May 6 -- Traffic violations in Gurugram has seen a sharp shift since 2023, with the highest number of challans issued against speeding (123,538), wrong-side driving (203,908), wrong parking (183,771) and hasty lane-change (79,550) in 2025, among ten violations.
According to traffic police data, these four violations accounted for around 590,000 challans, nearly 47% of the total 1,244,812 challans issued last year in Gurugram. The numbers rose from about 45% of 929,007 challans in 2024 and 10% of 828,678 in 2023.
Data through RTI shows the four violations have grown over 6.5 times since 2023, significantly driving the overall increase in challans during the period. In comparison, around 422,207 challans were issued in 2024 and 89,453 in 2023.
Category-wise daily average have also increased since 2023. Speeding challans rose from 9 in 2023 to 51 in 2024 and 338 in 2025. Wrong-side driving rose from 10 to 500 to 558. Wrong parking and hasty lane change rose from 43 to 433 to 503 and 82 to 169 to 218 during the same period.
However, till March 2026, the daily average showed a slight dip --- speeding (229), wrong-side driving (322), wrong parking (384) and hasty lane change (95).
Traffic police officials attributed the surge to strict enforcement with AI-backed automatic number plate registration (ANPR) cameras. These cameras can detect up to 14 high-speed violations and are linked to the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) for live-monitoring of 233 junctions and expressway corridors.
Other violations such as signal jumping and driving without a seat belt or helmet have risen steadily, from 291,170 in 2023 to 292,661 in 2024 and 486,060 in 2025. Road sign-related offences declined from 446,479 in 2023 to 183,283 in 2024 and 135,192 in 2025.
A recent study, "Zero Fatality District", by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) identified 174 accident-prone areas in Gurugram between 2023 and 2024. It found that speeding and rash driving contribute to 19% of total fatalities, making them a critical behavioural risk factor.
A police station-wise data showed that Bilaspur recorded 53 fatal crashes, followed by 36 in Manesar, 30 in Gurgaon (Sadar), 22 in Industrial Sector-7 and 28 in Badshahpur, among others. Majority of them resulted due to dangerous overtaking, speeding, zig-zag and rash-driving.
A senior traffic police official said location-wise audits of blackspots are currently underway, along with identifying traffic-violation trends contributing to accidents. "The studies will allow us to step up speed management strategies, stricter enforcement, design improvements and public awareness measures to introduce behavioural changes among motorists," the senior official said....
