'Have nothing to say:' Families say hopes dashed after SC denial
New Delhi, Jan. 6 -- The families of Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam said their hopes were dashed after the Supreme Court denied the two bail in the alleged larger conspiracy case linked to the 2020 Delhi riots. The court cited their "central and formative roles" in the conspiracy while denying bail, but granted bail to five co-accused-Gulfisha Fatima, Meeran Haider, Shifa-ur-Rehman, Mohd Saleem Khan and Shadab Ahmed-citing subsidiary allegations.
Walking out of court, Umar's father, SQR Ilyas, told HT, "I have nothing to say now. It's unfortunate." His mother, Sabiha Khanam, said, "He isn't allowed a conditional bail also. And, there's no evidence against him." Khalid told his partner Banojyotsna Lahiri he was "really happy" and "relieved" for those who got bail, adding, "This is my life now."
Sharjeel's brother Muzammil said, "Six years without a trial, no witnesses, no evidence. Why are they punishing my brother like this?"
For those granted bail, reactions were of relief. At AIMIM leader Shifa Ur Rahman's residence in Jamia Nagar, his wife, Nooreen Fatima, had instructed no one was to leave without eating as people came to congratulate them. His son Zia, 15, said his friends demanded a party.
Gulfisha Fatima's father Tanseef Hussain said he was "happy his daughter was finally coming home." Shadab's father Shamshaad Ahmed said, "I just want to see my son's face...I know he will get his job and life back." Meeran Haider's sister Farzana said her father was in tears. Mohd Saleem Khan's daughter Saima said, "My father was innocent and nobody had any evidence against him. I am happy he will be home soon."...
