Zubeen Garg cremated with full state honours in Assam
India, Sept. 24 -- Singer Zubeen Garg's last rites were performed with full state honours on Tuesday in Kamarkuchi, Assam's Kamrup Metropolitan district. Assam police personnel acted as pallbearers, carrying his coffin, and a gun salute was given before the cremation. Zubeen's wife, Garima Saikia, accompanied by their four dogs, was present and visibly emotional during the rituals. His sister, Palme Borthakur, and music composer Rahul Gautam, a protege of the singer, lit the pyre amid the gun salutes.
Several prominent figures, including Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, union ministers Kiren Rijiju and Sarbananda Sonowal, and Assam Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary, attended to pay their final respects.
The late singer's mortal remains had been kept at the Arjun Bhogeshwar Baruah Sports Complex in Guwahati since Sunday. Fans gathered and sang in tribute as they queued to pay their respects.
