India, July 22 -- As a senior neurosurgeon, I see first-hand how essential it is to care for our brain at every stage of life. This World Brain Day - observed on July 22 every year - carries an important theme: Brain Health for All Ages. It's a timely reminder that our brain needs attention not just in old age, but from the earliest stages of life, including before birth.
Neurological conditions such as stroke, epilepsy, brain tumours, dementia, and developmental disorders are among the leading causes of disability and death. What's most concerning is that many people ignore early symptoms or delay medical consultation, resulting in conditions that could have been prevented or better managed.
Maintain a healthy diet, stay physically and mentally active, have adequate sleep, avoid tobacco and excess alcohol, manage stress, and keep blood pressure, sugar, and cholesterol under control. For children, proper nutrition, early development screening, and vaccinations are vital.
Be alert to sudden headaches, memory issues, speech problems, imbalance, vision changes, or seizures. These symptoms demand immediate medical evaluation. Early intervention can save lives and preserve quality of life.
This Brain Awareness Day, let us all commit to lifelong brain care. Early action, regular check-ups, and public awareness are key. A healthy brain ensures a healthy, independent life - for ourselves and for future generations....
