We don't need others to decide what's offensive: IGL contestant on PIL against show
India, May 27 -- Samay Raina's YouTube show India's Got Latent (IGL) has been at the centre of controversy since the comedian landed in legal trouble for his "obscene" remarks. Earlier this month, Samay was summoned to the Supreme Court for a PIL which accused him of mocking persons with disabilities, including a contestant, partially blind comedian Kushal Bhanushali.
However, Kushal responded to the complaint by posting a Reel. Speaking to us, he says he did not find Samay's comments offensive: "People are judging on behalf of disabled people without asking us what we think. We don't need others to decide what's offensive. Sometimes, we want to be treated like everyone else - that includes being the subject of jokes, too."
The apex court's summons came after the Cure SMA Foundation of India filed a petition citing an episode where Samay asked Kushal, "Which of your eyes should I look into?"
But Kushal insists, "Before this, I struggled to get stage slots. After appearing on [IGL], I've been getting regular calls." He adds, "A lot of disabled people reached out and told me that watching me gave them the confidence to try stand-up or put themselves out there in public." As for the debate about sensitivity in comedy, the comic notes, "If something is offensive, let the person it concerns say so."...
