The most respectful marriage proposal goes viral after 40 years
India, June 7 -- A
n emotional letter penned in 1984 by a young man seeking permission to marry the woman he loved has resurfaced online, touching hearts across the internet. Shared on Reddit by user Rich-Arrival-1427, the handwritten note was addressed to the user's maternal grandfather-affectionately called "Nanaji."
Written in the mother's native language, Chhattisgarhi, the letter was a sincere attempt by a 30-year-old Delhi-based government employee to bridge cultural and family divides. "My dad learnt Chhattisgarhi just to impress my grandfather," the user revealed, "After six years of being together and three years of convincing our families, they finally married - and this year they celebrate 40 years of marriage."
In the letter, the young man acknowledges the possibility of resistance but pleads earnestly for understanding and blessings. "I am the boy who truly loves your daughter with all his heart," he writes. He reassures the future father-in-law of his intentions, emphasising that he comes from a respectable family, holds a steady job in Delhi, and vows that his beloved will never know sorrow in their life together. "I am an honest man," the letter continues, "We will live together with love, peace, and harmony.... Your answer will decide the direction of my life."
The post quickly amassed over 6,000 likes and sparked dozens of heartfelt comments. One user called it "the most respectful proposal ever seen," while another remarked, "This generation had a different kind of grace." Another praised the writer's effort to learn a new language for love, calling it "true commitment."
Many shared their own parents' love stories, turning the letter into a catalyst for intergenerational reflection.
