Suparn S Varma would rather call his work 'faith trilogy' here's why
India, Nov. 23 -- Filmmaker Suparn S Varma's recent release Haq, starring Yami Gautam and Emraan Hashmi, has earned both critical and commercial appreciation. While this is his second courtroom drama after Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai (2023), Suparn says he would rather it be viewed as part of a "faith trilogy" instead of a court trilogy.
Determined not to be typecast, he points out that his body of work spans multiple genres. "I have done action, thrillers, horror, web series of different kinds. Out of the 25 shows and films that I have written and directed, these are just two (court) films. I like exploring everything; I'm genre agnostic," says the filmmaker, who also directed the Rana Naidu franchise.
Explaining why he prefers calling it a faith trilogy, Suparn adds, "For me it's more a faith trilogy that I want to do than a courtroom trilogy. Sirf Ek Bandaa... was based on faith where Manoj's (Bajpayee, actor) character PC Solanki was a man of faith, a Shiv Bhakh, who at the end of the day uses Lord Shiv and Parvati's argument to convince the judge of why the said godman should be sent to jail."
He draws a parallel to his latest release. "In Haq as well, Shahzia Bano is a five-time Namazi who is a moulvi's daughter. And it's her faith and belief in the Quran that reflects with the Constitution and empowers her as a woman to fight her battles," he explains.
As he prepares to begin research on his next project, Suparn says that the heart of a story is what guides him: "If a story, emotion, or characters resonate with me, I just go with that feeling. If the story lands up in court, that's great; if it doesn't land up in court, it's not that I go hunting for only courtroom dramas. And honestly, the first half (of Haq) is a domestic drama. It's only the second half does it move there, so it's a very emotional story."...
