Something powerful about being in the water: Priyanshu on surfing his soul out in Sri Lanka
India, June 18 -- Priyanshu Painyuli recently took a break from films to travel to Sri Lanka, where he discovered a passion for surfing. The actor, known for his roles in Rashmi Rocket (2021) and Pippa (2023), says, "I love water. Any water sport has always excited me. As a kid, it started with swimming. Later, it became rafting and deep-sea diving. Water, I believe, has a humbling quality to it."
While the 36-year-old learnt surfing in Sri Lanka, it was not his first attempt at water sports. "I first tried surfing in Goa. But even in that one day, I felt a spark - something I really wanted to pursue," recalls Priyanshu. This compelled him to truly learn the sport at one of the world's premiere surfing destinations.
"I've only done a very basic course, but the experience was profound. Surfing isn't easy; it really challenges you. But more than that, it changes you. You find yourself in a different kind of stillness, even amid chaos," he shares.
Priyanshu has also tried deep-sea diving before. Comparing the two, the actor tells us, "When you dive, you're in another world for 45 minutes, breathing through oxygen that isn't your own. You feel small. You realise your problems are even smaller. Surfing gave me a similar sense - like, wow, there's so much more out there, and within me." He adds, "The whole experience reminded me of that Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011) scene where Hrithik Roshan dives and finds a kind of stillness. I felt that. It was powerful."
However, there are some hair-raising experiences he is yet to conquer. "I love heights, and I really want to try skydiving," he admits as he wraps up....
