RGV shelves Sarkar 4, says gangster films won't work after Dhurandhar
India, March 26 -- Days after announcing Sarkar 4, filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has shelved the film starring Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan. He revealed that the decision came after the impact of director Aditya Dhar's Dhurandhar, which he believes has changed the space for gangster dramas, and will now focus on a new project, titled Syndicate.
Speaking to Bollywood Hungama, RGV said, "I don't think Sarkar or any other gangster film will work anymore, not after Dhurandhar."
He also said that Dhar's approach to Dhurandhar inspired him creatively and pushed him to work with renewed energy. "I feel as charged as I did when I made Shiva (1990) and Satya (1998). So yes, I am no longer making Sarkar 4. I am making Syndicate," he said, adding, "I don't know how it will turn out, but believe me, it will be my most honest work since Satya."
Praising Dhar for his recent work, RGV continued that he now wants to rethink his direction: "I want to reset my clock. I feel about Aditya Dhar the way I felt about Steven Spielberg (filmmaker) in my college days." He added, "Yes, I am in awe of him (Dhar). What's wrong with that? Even at 68, I can be a fan, can't I?"
Explaining the shift in his creative approach, he reflected on the influences behind his earlier films. "All my previous gangster films were inspired by The Godfather (1972), be it Satya, Company (2002) or Sarkar (2005)... Else, I was making films just for the heck of it."
