Reviving a legacy: Ishan Suri and the restoration of Roshanara Club
India, July 29 -- W
ith an eye for timeless design and a deep reverence for heritage, designer and restorer Ishan Suri approaches restoration as an act of storytelling. His recent work on the historic Roshanara Club in North Delhi is a testament to this belief, where layers of history were carefully revealed, rather than rewritten.
The club has long stood as a testament to the city's colonial heritage and cricketing history. Established in 1922 and named after Mughal princess Roshanara, it was once the exclusive domain of British elites and a hub of leisure, culture, and sport. Most notably, it served as the birthplace of the BCCI in 1928.
When the century-old structure fell into disrepair, Ishan Suri was entrusted with its revival. Under the direction of the Delhi Development Authority and its architects and engineers, a sensitive restoration effort was set in motion - one that called for both technical expertise and cultural empathy.
Suri, the tailor for this restoration and known for his intuitive approach to heritage design, led the architectural renewal with care. Working alongside conservation experts and traditional artisans, he has been actively engaged in a range of heritage projects, including the restoration of several Lutyens' bungalows, bringing a deep respect for history and craftsmanship to every space he touches.
"Restoration is not about looking back with nostalgia, it's about engaging with history in a way that makes it relevant and beautiful for today," he says.
Reopened on July 27 this year, the Roshanara Club stands once more as a vibrant landmark - a restored emblem of Delhi's layered cultural identity, and a shining example of heritage reclaimed with purpose and integrity.htc...
