Renuka Shahane: OTT offers more equality than films
India, Aug. 11 -- In recent years, Renuka Shahane has focused on writing and directing, with fewer acting roles. This year, she returned to the screen in a comic role with the web series Dupahiya, after having played a comic part in the 2021 release Govinda Naam Mera.
Having worked across both film and web formats recently, Renuka notes a clear difference between them. "In the series format, there is less hierarchy. There is more equality between people behind and in front of the camera, there is a different kind of camaraderie, which makes for a good OTT series. On film sets, there's a definite hierarchy," she says, noting that the number of women in the industry has increased now. "You see a lot more young people on sets today and a lot more women in roles they would traditionally would not be seen in. Govinda Naam Mera was shot by a female cinematographer, it's a great evolution," she adds.
With streaming, Renuka also feels female actors above a certain age are finally getting meatier roles. "There are so many new stories for women that are written today. Ensemble casts and character actors have become a norm, and things are specifically written for people over a particular age, which didn't happen earlier," the actor tells us.
She muses about the entertainment industry's recent evolution. "We want variety from actors. Our audience has also evolved because they are exposed to so much content from all around the world. As an audience, we expect better from our writers and our directors. That's where the crux lies. If the audience wants the same thing from you over and over, you're not going to be in anything experimental in nature, especially not women," Renuka ends....
