Red Chillies opposes Wankhede's plea; latter rejects defence

India, Nov. 1 -- In the latest development amid the ongoing defamation case filed by Sameer Wankhede, the makers of The B***ds of Bollywood told the Delhi High Court that his claim is "wholly misconceived" and "devoid of merit".
The Netflix series, created and directed by Aryan Khan, premiered in September and is described as a dark satire on the Hindi film industry. Wankhede, who led the 2021 cruise-drug raid that resulted in Aryan's arrest before he was later cleared in 2022, filed a Rs.2 crore defamation suit earlier this month. He alleged that a character in the first episode closely resembles him and termed the show "a calculated hit job" aimed at damaging his reputation.
In its reply, Red Chillies Entertainment argued that the show is a work of "situational satire" and that Wankhede's public image had already been under scrutiny long before its release. "Even before the release of The Ba***ds of Bollywood, the plaintiff was already the subject of public ridicule," the company said in its affidavit, adding that the case stems from "hypersensitivity" and attempts to "stifle artistic and satirical expression."
Wankhede, in his rejoinder, accused the studio of "extracting revenge" and claimed the makers cannot "hide behind the convenient veil of satire or artistic expression to justify a malicious act."
The Delhi High Court, after hearing both sides on Thursday, has asked all parties, Wankhede, Red Chillies Entertainment and Netflix, to file their written submissions. The matter has been listed for the next hearing on November 10.htc...
