Randeep Hooda lands in flood-hit Gurdaspur, joins relief team
India, Sept. 5 -- As heavy rains inundated Punjab, leading to state-wide flooding, evacuations and loss of property, a slew of artistes have stepped up to support the affected.
The latest to do so is Randeep Hooda. The actor-director recently landed in the village of Gurdaspur, one of the more adversely-impacted regions in the state. Photos and videos of Randeep working with an NGO on the ground went viral, with several social media users hailing him as a "hero".
A video clip online shows the 49-year-old saying, "I admire the work and groundwork [of the NGO]. I like to visit people and personally help them."
Another clip shows the actor wading through knee-deep water to get to a relief camp. "This is the state here currently. We were in a vehicle, but the water levels rose too high," he said, adding that he and the team were on their way to help families who were forced to evacuate due to the severity of the situation.
According to the state government, close to 1,655 villages were affected by flooding, with Gurdaspur the most affected area of the lot. On Thursday, over 19,000 residents had been evacuated; meanwhile, more than 160 relief camps are operating to provide essentials to families. htc...
