QR code on CBSE Class 12 Maths paper: Scan to open Rickroll video?
India, March 11 -- In a bizarre incident, a QR code printed on the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Class 12 Mathematics question paper has created a buzz on social media. Several internet users reportedly claim that scanning this code opens a music video.
The Class 12 Mathematics and Applied Mathematics examination was conducted on Monday. Soon after, photos of the question paper began to circulate online, consisting of a QR code visible in the top-left corner of the paper. A video uploaded by X user @Nher_who? shows a student scanning the QR code, which redirected them to the 1987 song Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley.
The track is widely associated with a bait-and-switch internet prank called 'Rickrolling', where a user is tricked into clicking a link that leads to the music video of Astley's number. This meme had gained widespread popularity online in the mid-2000s, leading the song to cross a billion streams.
While some users claimed that it is AI-generated, others verified the authenticity. However, on Tuesday, CBSE issued an official statement saying, "The security of the question papers remains uncompromised... necessary steps are being taken by the Board to ensure that such issues are not repeated in future."
The Class 12 board examinations began on February 17 and are scheduled till April 10. CBSE first introduced QR codes on examination papers in 2018 as a measure to enhance security and help prevent paper leaks.
