India, Aug. 29 -- I n sports, fans often speculate when athletes should retire. Now, the same question is being asked of classical artistes and their stage life. At Delhi's Kamani Auditorium, during the Amar Jyoti 2025 event this week, writer-physician Taslima Nasreen watched legendary flautist Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, 87, perform live. Moved by how age had seemingly caught up with the maestro, she posted a video on X and wrote: "He can no longer truly play. His hands tremble; the flute will not stay steady..." Her post divided opinion online. Some argued the veteran was unfairly coerced into performing, while others insisted only the artiste can decide when to stop, and some even questioned Taslima's intention of posting the video. The artist dismissed any suggestion that he was being forced to perform and added: "Hum log kisi ke force ko nahi sunte... Main apne dil se perform karta hoon. The listeners keep me motivated. "...
