Oprah on stopping weight-loss medication at 70, and why she went back
India, Jan. 2 -- American talk-show host Oprah Winfrey is back in the spotlight, this time opening up about her widely discussed weight-loss journey and her decision to use GLP-1 medications to manage her health.
In a recent interview with People, Oprah reflected on how her life has changed since starting GLP-1 medication, calling the experience "deeply liberating." "The fact that there's a medically approved prescription for managing weight and staying healthier, in my lifetime, feels like relief, like redemption, like a gift and not something to hide behind or be ridiculed for," she said, adding, "I'm done with the shaming from other people and, particularly, myself."
Two years into her journey, Oprah also spoke about the backlash she faced after going public with weight loss medication. She revealed that she stopped GLP-1 injections six months after starting them, on her 70th birthday in January 2024. "I said, 'I'm going to see if the science is right. I want to see if I can do without it'," she recalled.
She began using GLP-1 medications at 69 and later quit them "cold turkey", committing to a healthy diet and regular workouts. Despite her efforts, she regained about 20 pounds over the following year, something she says led to an important realisation. "It's going to be a lifetime thing," she told. "I'm on high blood pressure medication, and if I stop taking that, my blood pressure goes up. The same thing is true with these medications. I've proven to myself that I need it." Speaking about obesity more broadly, she added, "It is a disease. It's not about willpower, it's about the brain."
