New York's new crush: Rama Duwaji's style file
India, Nov. 7 -- From art-school minimalism to diaspora chic, artist Rama Duwaji, New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani's wife, is the city's (and the fashion world's) latest obsession. At 28, Rama is already a serious name in the NYC creative scene: an illustrator and animator whose work frequently explores the Middle Eastern identity and women's experience.
Rama's fashion ethos is refreshingly modern. To put it simply, it is downtown art-school minimalism blended with diasporic craft. For her debut public appearance alongside Zohran, she wore a velvet-lace skirt by New York label Ulla Johnson and a top by Palestinian-Jordanian designer Zeid Hijazi, in a nod to Palestinian resistance.
Born in Houston to a Syrian-descent family, Duwaji spent part of her childhood in Dubai before moving back to the U.S. She studied illustration in Qatar and earned her MFA in New York. Today, based in Brooklyn, her personal story blends transnational layers with an urban, contemporary aesthetic.
Her style is also finding fans in the Indian fashion world, with designers gushing over her style. Designer Nachiket Barve says, "I love the fact that her style has a touch of rebellion and that she picked a Palestinian-Jordanian designer for her appearance makes it all the more clear that she believes in thoughtful dressing."
Reflecting on her makeup choices, stylish Ishan Bhansali opines, "Her Kohl-rimmed eyes and softly flushed cheeks make her a Gen-Z beauty icon. She is using makeup to communicate a deeper narrative of identity and art."
Rama met Zohran on the dating app Hinge in 2021. Cut to February this year, when they had their civil wedding. Rama opted for a white knee-length dress with boots, with wedding photos taken on the subway and the streets....
