India, April 29 -- Myths and memories that reside in our subconscious are the focus of Delhi-born artist Shabir Hussain Santosh's ongoing exhibition, Beyond Myth and Metaphor. The canvases encapsulate the artist's lived experiences, his Kashmiri lineage and the living myths that continue to shape his identity. "My work has long been rooted in mythology, a fascination that began in childhood. I want there to be mystery in my work, and mythology is the only subject where I can find it," says the 62-year-old, adding, "In this series, I've also delved into metaphor as a key element as I try to find parallels between myths and my life as well as between my experiences and what is happening around me." His art resonates, as he personalises the myths: "We have so many childhood memories, stories passed down to us, like of Apsaras who live in heaven and are known for their captivating dance and singing. I try to materialise those thoughts and memories through my art." The artist's intuitive engagement with colour deepens his work's narrative. Santosh reflects, "This time, I've explored a broader range of colour schemes. Expression in painting for me comes primarily through colour. So my use of colour is bold, something that my father (tantric artist GR Santosh) instilled in me.
