Meta and Google ordered to pay Rs.60 lakhs to woman for her social media addiction
India, March 27 -- A 20-year-old woman has won a legal battle on Wednesday in Los Angeles, with a jury holding tech giants Meta and Google liable for negligence and awarding her $6 million (Rs.60 lakhs) in damages for harm to her mental health.
The woman told the court she began using Google's YouTube at the age of six and Meta's Instagram by nine, alleging that the platforms were designed to be addictive, pointing to features like infinite scroll that keep users hooked on a constant stream of content. Supporting her claim, a therapist testified that social media use was a contributing factor to her diagnosis.
Both firms, however, pushed back. Meta said it "respectfully disagrees", adding that mental health cannot be blamed on a single platform. YouTube, on its part, argued that it is simply a streaming service and not inherently addictive.
Social media was also quick to react. One user said, "Finally Big Tech being called out," while another wrote, "we grew up on these apps, this feels personal." Some called it a "wake-up call for parents, too."
