Limit excessive screen time to save your neck
India, June 4 -- Increasing use of screen time comes with a heavy price involving physical health. Excessive use of mobile phones and laptops leads to increased strain on the neck of an individual. "The neck is a very special zone of the human body; not only does it traffic important organs and blood flow to the brain, but it also provides vital support to the head. Normally, the human head weighs about 5-6kg. When the neck is excessively folded with the use of cell phones, it contributes to the generation of forces nearly 60 pounds in weight. This increased strain puts individuals at high risk of neck musculoskeletal disease. Frequent change of posture is needed during screen time," says Dr Venkata Amar Kumar Nuthalapati, a physical therapist affiliated with Amedisys.
He warned of difficult neurological consequences, including damage to the nerve in the neck and spinal cord. "Certain individuals with rheumatoid arthritis and spondyloarthritis are more vulnerable to damage," says Dr Nuthalapati, emphasising getting neck X-rays for evaluation of neck vertebral joint instability, especially during pre-anaesthetic evaluation. Neck-relaxing exercises and correct seating postures are crucial, says the doctor who brings in a wealth of experiences based on his long years of practice across India, the UK and the USA. Dr Nuthalapati stressed that limiting screen time is not only beneficial for physical health involving the neck but also improves cognition, enhances social interaction and stimulates individuals to get out and walk....
