India, Sept. 19 -- The Delhi High Court on Wednesday indicated it would pass an order granting an interim injunction in favour of filmmaker Karan Johar, seeking protection of his personality and publicity rights. Karan has been granted relief after complaining about the misuse of his name, voice, and photos on social media. Before approaching the court, the 53-year-old had raised concerns about websites and social media platforms selling merchandise such as mugs and t-shirts, or using his name, photo, or likeness without permission. He had also flagged issues with fake profiles, impersonation, domain name misuse, and disparaging memes that exploited his persona for commercial gain. Speaking on the issue, Rakhee Bajpai Tiwari, Chief Legal Officer for Karan's production house, tells us, "There is a lot of obscene and defamatory content made using Karan's name, personal attributes, and other identifiable unique elements. Hence, the suit was filed to seek protection. Going forward, there will be an injunction on infringing and defamatory content; it will need to be taken down. There has been an increase in infringement due to the AI boom, resulting in deepfakes." Commenting on actors like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan, who have also decided to protect their personality rights, she adds, "Misuse of celebrity names and attributes for unauthorised commercial gain and defamatory content has become widespread, making this protection the need of the hour."...
