Kay Kay Menon: Discussion on nepotism hasn't provided them the job

ctor Kay Kay Menon believes the continued debate around nepotism in the film industry hasn't led to any real change, especially when it comes to opportunities for so-called outsiders. Having carved out a career without a godfather in the industry, Menon feels the discussion has done little to alter the power dynamics.
"The conversations around nepotism haven't actually helped anyone get work," says the 58-year-old actor, known for acclaimed performances in Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi, Black Friday and Life in a. Metro, among others. "Film companies are not public service entities. They're private companies trying to make a profit. So if they choose to hire their own children, I don't see how that can be contested. They have the right to take those decisions."
Menon points out that the arrival of streaming platforms has shifted the game in a significant way, providing space for more diverse stories and talent. "Opportunities have increased with the rise of OTT platforms. Unlike theatrical films that cater to mass psychology, OTT viewing is an individual experience. That changes everything. You need good stories and good actors, it's no longer about just star power," he explains.
Taking a dig at formulaic cinema, he adds, "The dhan-tanaiyan approach doesn't work here. You won't find someone standing up to dance while watching Sheila Ki Jawani on an OTT platform, that's a party song, meant for a different setting."...
