It's raining praises as Divya bags India's first Women's Chess World Cup title

elebs and social media users erupted in celebration as Divya Deshmukh, a 19-year-old from Nagpur (Maharashtra), etched her name into history books by becoming India's first-ever FIDE Women's World Cup Champion. From former cricketer Sachin Tendulkar to actors Jackie Shroff and Riteish Deskmukh, the country celebrated her win after a thrilling final against reigning World Rapid Champion Koneru Humpy, 38, from Andhra Pradesh. Social media platforms were abuzz with fans calling her a "trailblazer", "chess queen", and "national treasure".
To celebrate the historic feat, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis called her "a daughter of Nagpur and Maharashtra", and announced that state government will honour her. He also congratulated her via a video call.
Sharing a video of the winning moment, CM Fadnavis wrote on Insta: "Congratulations to Grandmaster Divya Deshmukh! At just 19, she has conquered the 64 squares, becoming India's 88th Grandmaster and 1st Indian Woman to achieve the title! Her brilliant win at the 2025 FIDE Women's World Cup in Batumi, Georgia came after a thrilling final against Indian legend Koneru Humpy, who played with skill and grace."
